The Blessing of our new Lublin House.

On Saturday, 25th of October 2003 the official opening of the new house belonging to the Polish First Cycle took place. François Richard our Superior General and André Schaminée the new Superior of the Intercontinental Delegation attended the ceremony.

The Eucharist was presided by His Grace Jozef Zycinski, the Archbishop of Lublin, and a good friend of the White Fathers. Some 80 people, including those responsible for the construction, quite a number of our friends and some of the local clergy prayed with us, thanking God for this new achievement and asking Him for a blessing on the community. The ceremony was joyful, simple in form, yet with a strong stress on our Missionary vocation. For that purpose we changed the official prayers a little as they were composed for the opening of a monastery; after all, we do not pretend to be monks, since we are Missionaries.

The opening of the new house marks the beginning of a new stage in the history of the so-called "Polish project". Actually, we should say a third stage. The first one started some 20 years ago in no less a place than Dublin, where two appointed confreres, Lazaro Bustince and Herman Cornelissen, were in charge of a little group of five Polish candidates to the Society. Yet it should be noted that the White Fathers had already infiltrated Poland in the Seventies, notably in the person of Anton Mettrop.

After 18 years of active presence we could say that the Missionaries of Africa are no longer unknown in Poland. We hope that with the new facilities which our new house includes like a dormitory, a conference room and an attic which is such an ideal place for a Missionary museum we could be even more open to new forms of Missionary awareness, like vocation camps or recollection days.

This year we've got 10 candidates: 3 in Second Year and 7 newcomers. They follow their Philosophy studies at Lublin Diocesan Seminary, which from the very beginning offered this assistance to our candidates. The Staff of the house, one Irish confrere and two Polish are taking care of the spiritual and linguistic development of the candidates. To ensure contact with the poor and needy of our times the young men take part in different forms of social projects with the homeless, refugees, children from alcoholic families and mentally handicapped youth.
